Construction Techniques-5160

Composition:
  0.60 % carbon,
  0.7% manganese,
  0.90% chromium,
  0.30% silicon

Heat treating characteristics:
  1525 F critical
  600 F austempering
  63 Rockwell C as quenched

Advantages:
This is a wonderful tool steel - high resistance to warpage, very tough, and typically used in leaf springs, hence it adds flexibility.

Source:
Acquired from the usual steel suppliers. Typically, a 1.5" x 1/4" thick bar x 22' is under $75, which means that a normal knife blank runs maybe $3..$5. There is little motivation to recycle old leaf springs to get 5160!
